A direct ancestor of the motion picture projector as a means for visual storytelling. This 19th century innovation brought stories to life through transparent glass slides. They were commonly used by the 19th century horror theatres known as Phantasmagoria, to project frightening images, especially of ghosts. It could itself be used to project moving images, as well as still photographs and paintings, paving the way for modern cinema.
