Absinthe spoons often have intricate designs inspired by nature, were both functional and decorative, reflecting the cultural and artistic significance of Absinthe during its heyday. This particular design circa 1900-1920s, with its leaf-like pattern, emphasizes the herbal roots and mystique of the drink.
An absinthe spoon is a specialised tool used in the traditional preparation of absinthe, a popular drink in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, particularly in France. The spoon rests on the rim of a glass, and a sugar cube is placed on its perforated surface. Cold water is then slowly dripped over the sugar cube, dissolving it and allowing the sweetened water to flow through the spoon into the absinthe below. This process, called the "louche," causes the absinthe to turn from a clear green to a milky, opalescent colour as essential oils are released.
